Early Verdict The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro has a price tag that places it in the budget phone’ category, but lots of its features like the 64MP main camera, big battery, and FHD+ display, make it feel like a decent mid-ranger instead. The headphone jack and microSD card support are important additions too, enough perhaps to make up for a few shortcomings like its bloatware, the addition of some unnecessary cameras, and a design that's a bit chunky. Pros +Low price+64MP main camera Cons -Fingerprint sensor rather high-Some bloatware Redmi is Xiaomi’s budget phone brand, but while its phones always have impressively low prices, they bring some decent features to the party too, and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro is perhaps the best example of Redmi Note 8 Pro represents the most top-end of the Redmi Note 8 series, although there’s not too much in common between the phones beyond the user interface. And despite being more advanced than a few other Redmi phones, the Note 8 Pro is still decidedly Redmi Note 8 Pro has a collection of features you wouldn’t expect in a phone this affordable – there’s a 64MP main camera with three other snappers, a large Full HD+ display, a big battery, and a decent chipset. So the phone has plenty of aspects you wouldn’t expect given its price tag, but does that mean there’s a catch?Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro price and availabilityThe Redmi Note 8 Pro is available online, via opens in new tab, Amazon opens in new tab or certain phone retailers depending on your can pick the phone up for $399 / £229 roughly AU$600 if you want 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, but if you want to downgrade the storage to 64GB it will cost you $349 / £209 around AU$500. The cost in both cases is a lot higher in the US, so it’s likely you’re paying for import costs too. In the UK, though, it’s a pretty affordable price.Image credit FutureDesign and displayThe Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro looks surprisingly like the the Realme X2 Pro, so if you’ve seen that phone you’ve basically seen this one. It’s a big, fairly heavy phone, that’s also pretty the back there’s a vertical camera bump in the top center, one which also houses a fingerprint sensor which looks like one of the lenses at first glance. There’s also another lens to the side. A volume rocker and power button sit on the right-hand edge of the device, and on the bottom there's a USB-C port and a headphone jack.Image credit FutureThis back is glass, which is fairly rare at this price tag where most phones have plastic Redmi Note 8 Pro is rather chunky, thanks partly to the screen, which is broken up by a teardrop notch at the top. This is a 1080 x 2340 LCD display, which is the display tech we’d expect in a phone of this price, and while the colors are perhaps a little sub-par, the reasonably high resolution partly makes up for a big display is good for viewing content, social media and more, the phone is arguably too big – we had trouble reaching the fingerprint scanner at times, so some users might find it prohibitively and battery lifeImage credit FutureThe Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro has a 64MP main camera, which is one of its big draws, but there’s also an 8MP ultra-wide, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor 64MP camera takes pretty decent-looking pictures when you use it in a well-lit environment, so if you like taking pictures of natural settings, or outdoors in any way, this could be a really good tool for you. Saying that, the pixel size is pretty small, so low-light shooting and night mode takes snaps that are quite ultra-wide snapper takes pictures that are… well, very wide, as the name suggests. Pictures look reasonable, but there does seem to be a little distortion at the edges of images, more than perhaps in other handsets which have distortion-cancelling you can expect from 2MP sensors, the macro and depth-sensing cameras don’t seem super useful. Macro pictures are pretty low-res, although they are fairly bright, and we didn’t notice the depth sensor having an impact on picture quality when we shot with or without it the latter of which was achieved by putting a finger in the way.Image credit FutureOn the front there's a 20MP selfie camera, which is a pretty high-res snapper for a budget phone, and we did think the pictures taken on this looked quite good. If you’re a prolific selfie taker, this could be a decent phone for you if you’re on a battery in the Redmi Note 8 Pro is 4,500mAh, which is a good size, but then lots of budget phones have big didn’t test the Note 8 Pro enough to draw a final verdict on the battery life, but our initial impression is that it’s quite good. We’d expect the phone to last at least a day from a full battery, perhaps even getting you part way through the second day before you need to power it up of which, the Redmi Note 8 Pro supports 18W fast charging, which is roughly average for a phone at this price, and while charging it didn’t take too long, it wasn’t lightning-fast and specsImage credit FutureThe Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro runs Android 9 Pie out of the box, but it can be upgraded to Android 10, and Xiaomi’s MIUI 11 is laid over the is mainly an aesthetic change, but it’s worth noting the phone comes with a fair few bloatware apps that you might find yourself deleting straight away, like Opera, a web browser app that’s redundant when you’ve got Chrome, and the Mi Community and Mi Store apps, which few people will likely chipset here is a MediaTek Helio G90T, which isn’t exactly the most premium piece of kit MediaTek typically makes mid-range and budget phone internals, but for this low price you could do a lot worse, especially since this is one of the company’s better surprising spec given the low price point is the fact that there’s 6GB of RAM here, as many other phones at this price tag would have just swiping between home screens and menus the phone didn’t feel sluggish or slow, which is a big difference between this and the Redmi Note 8T. Gaming felt pretty snappy too, if we didn’t boost the graphics too high, so if you’re a mobile gamer this might be one of the best phones at its also worth noting that the Redmi Note 8 Pro could take multiple 64MP pictures in quick succession without slowing down, freezing or crashing, which is a sign that there’s some decent optimization at play here.Image credit FutureEarly verdictThe Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro could be one of the best phones at its price, as it would very easily pass as a mid-ranger in quite a few ways. In fact, as we stated earlier in this review, it has a lot in common with the Realme X2 Pro, which goes for quite a bit the phone is a little larger than we’d like, which may put off some users. There’s a little more bloatware than we’d like too, although a quick deletion spree should see off those screen quality, main camera specs and battery life though are all impressive for the price, so when we’ve conducted our full review we’d expect to see this rank quite well in our list of the best cheap phones, and best Xiaomi phones. India is Xiaomi’s most important foreign market, and with the importance the company places on this country, one can even argue that the country gets a certain priority greater than even China, especially in the budget segment. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 series has been one of the best-selling products in its segment in the country, and the Redmi Note series to date has sold over a 100 Million devices globally. And now, Xiaomi is looking to continue the streak with its latest offerings. Meet the new Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro by Xiaomi, launched in India alongside MIUI 11. With the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, the company is switching over from the trusty Qualcomm mid-range SoCs over to the new gaming-oriented MediaTek Helio G90T SoC. It remains to be seen how good the SoC actually is, and how customers respond to this change. The Redmi Note 8 Pro also makes the jump to UFS for storage, which should make a good deal of difference in daily usage on this mid-range device. Further, the Indian variant also gets a dedicated microSD card slot with support for up to 512GB cards. In terms of RAM, the Redmi Note 8 Pro gets at least 6GB LPDDR4X RAM with a 2133MHz frequency to ensure fast-paced gaming. Other than the SoC, the Redmi Note 8 Pro also features a small deviation in the design language from its predecessor, featuring 3D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the back to give it a better feel in hand. We also witness smaller bezels all around the phone, though there is no pop-up camera to be had. To compensate, you do get an upgraded 20MP shooter on the front waterdrop notch. The smartphone gets an IP52 rating for protection from dust and water splashes along with P2i coating on the back. The Redmi Note 8 Pro will be available in Gamma Green, Halo White, and Shadow Black color variants in India. On the back though, things do get a bit more interesting. The Redmi Note 8 Pro is the first Xiaomi device in India to come with a 64MP rear camera setup, present alongside three additional sensors. The 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor utilizes pixel binning technology for brighter and sharper images and is also able to produce images at full 64MP if you need to focus on details. Wide-angle duties are handled by an 8MP shooter, complemented by a 2MP dedicated camera for macro shots and a dedicated 2MP depth sensor. Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro XDA Forums The Dot Notch display comes with Full HD+ resolution and is certified for HDR content for a wider dynamic range while watching content on YouTube or playing games like PUBG Mobile. The Redmi Note 8 Pro also ends up retaining several features that have contributed to the popularity of the lineup, such as the headphone jack, and the IR blaster. The Redmi Note 7 Pro made the jump over to USB Type-C, and the Redmi Note 8 Pro continues on with the same, but adding on support for fast charging protocols such as USB Power Delivery, MediaTek Pump Express and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ and Quick Charge yes, on a MediaTek device. These quick charging solutions will complement the 4,500 mAh battery very well. Overall, one can see why the Redmi Note lineup manages to retain its popularity among the Indian masses. Xiaomi will be supplying an 18W charger within the box. The Redmi Note 8 Pro was launched in China with MIUI 10 on top of Android Pie. Since the Indian launch comes after the release of MIUI 11, Xiaomi is also promising the update to its Indian users. The MIUI update for Redmi Note 8 Pro is scheduled to start in December. Xiaomi has also previously released the kernel sources for the Redmi Note 8 Pro. In India, Redmi is adding Alexa integration on the Redmi Note 8 Pro and you can use it alongside any other voice assistant. So, we presume that the Note 8 Pro’s ability to hail Alexa will not conflict with Google Assistant that comes as part of Android. Interestingly, besides using the standard tasks that Alexa can perform, it can also be used to control Mi TVs via the Mi Remote app. When you ask Alexa to change a channel or play anything on the Mi TV, the Alexa app communicated with the Mi Remote app and the command is conveyed to the Mi TV by the means of the IR blaster. Pricing and Availability The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro will be available in India from October 21st for a price of ₹14,999 ~$210 for the 6GB/64GB variant, ₹15,999 ~$225 for 6GB/128GB variant, and ₹17,999 ~$250 for 8GB/128GB. The device will be available for purchase via Amazon India, and Mi Home stores. Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 While the Redmi Note 8 Pro takes a few bold steps forward, the Redmi Note 8 sticks to more familiar and safe territory. The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC, which can be seen as an improvement over the Snapdragon 660 present on the Redmi Note 7 in India. The biggest point of difference between the two SoCs will be the adoption of an 11nm FinFET process against the 14nm process on the outgoing SoC, which should provide for better power efficiency. The next set of improvements is likely to be on the AI performance and a slight improvement on the GPU, but all of these are specific to the SoC and may or may not necessarily translate into perceivable gains when presented on a phone. The smartphone gets up to 6GB of LPDDR4x RAM. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is also immediately recognizable as a successor to the Redmi Note 7 / 7 Pro, especially looking at its design. The phone does have the Redmi branding on the front chin – we aren’t huge fans of the same since there is a branding logo on the back too. The phone comes in Neptune Blue, Moonlight White, Space Black, and Cosmic Purple – the last of which is exclusive to India for now. The biggest point of difference externally is the quad rear camera setup coming in now with a wide-angle lens shooter and a dedicated macro lens shooter, which is a massive upgrade on theoretical versatility against the dual rear camera setup on the predecessors. Unlike the Redmi Note 8 Pro which has been blessed with a 64MP sensor, the Redmi Note 8 sticks to the now-familiar a Samsung GM1 48MP sensor, which was also seen on the Redmi Note 7 China and global and Note 7S India. In terms of storage, the Redmi Note 8 gets up to 128GB of inbuilt storage which can be further expanded up to an additional 512GB using the dedicated microSD card slot. The 18W fast charging support to beef up the 4,000mAh battery is complemented by an 18W charging brick inside the box. Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 XDA Forums The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 shares software features with the Pro and the rest of Xiaomi’s MIUI device ecosystem. Xiaomi has previously also released kernel sources for the Redmi Note 8. Pricing and Availability The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 will be available in India from October 21at for a price of ₹9,999 ~$140 for the 4GB/64GB variant and ₹12,999 ~$180 for the 6GB/128GB variant. The device will be available for purchase via Amazon India, and Mi Home retail stores. MIUI 11 Xiaomi also chose the occasion of the launch of two of its most important devices to announce the launch of MIUI 11 for the Indian market, which boasts of 80 Million monthly active users in India. MIUI 11 was already announced for the Chinese market, bringing in new features like the MiLan Pro font which we spotted in prior betas, variable thickness slider for fonts, new and improved Always-On Display, edge lighting feature for notifications, cross-platform file sharing, a new file management system, one-click document casting, and more changes. MIUI 11 China Betas have been available for installing on a lot of Xiaomi devices, and at the event, Xiaomi has detailed the MIUI 11 timeline for devices in India. Xiaomi India has added certain features that are specific to India. These include the ability to add videos as live wallpapers and while the feature should be available in MIUI launcher, we’re not sure if it gets to be on POCO Launcher as well. Further, the floating calculator, which we spotted on previous MIUI beta builds in China, is available in India with MIUI 11 and can be used in picture-in-picture mode over any app. Next, we have health-related features such as trackers for steps as well as women’s menstrual cycle embedded in the App Vault and the Mi Calendar, respectively. Similar to what OnePlus did with the floating notification and quick replies, Xiaomi is implementing a quick reply feature in MIUI 11 using which users can reply to incoming messages in floating windows when the phone is in the landscape mode. What’s unique with the Mint Keyboard is that you get to translate while you transliterate to other languages from English. You will also be able to find relevant emojis for all vernacular words. MIUI11 — MIUI India for MiFans MIUI_India October 16, 2019 Doing away with the controversial Kika keyboard, Xiaomi is adding a new keyboard app in MIUI 11 for India. The new Mint keyboard is a made-in-India application and supports 25 Indic languages. Besides the vast support for Indic languages, it supports translations with transliterations so as to suggest you with translations of the words typed by you. Additionally, it has features like cloud sync, real-time emoji suggestions, clipboard, and support for themes. The Mint keyboard is also available for non-MIUI devices and can be downloaded from the Play Store. MIUI rollout in India begins on October 22 and the initial few devices to get the new firmware will be the POCO F1, Redmi K20, Redmi Note 7 lineup, and the Redmi Y3. Meanwhile, the newly launched Redmi Note 8 Pro will get the update in December. The schedule for other devices is mentioned in the image below.
